Eel Grass Monitoring Open House

Date: Friday July 24th 2026

 Eelgrass Monitoring Open House

Watch citizen science in action and learn why this underwater meadow matters.

Join Peconic Baykeeper and Peconic Estuary Partnership for a day at the beach as a small team of trained volunteers conducts eelgrass monitoring and you get a front-row seat!

This isn’t a hands-on work day although there will be some opportunities to view the eel grass meadow. It’s a chance to watch, ask questions, and understand how scientists and community members track the health of one of our most important coastal habitats. Eelgrass meadows clean our water, shelter juvenile fish, and store carbon. Seeing the monitoring up close is the best way to understand what it takes to protect them.

Those who are comfortable snorkeling and swimming may observe the eel grass meadow after monitoring is complete, a shallow area close to the beach will be set up for participants to view eel grass who do not want to swim or snorkel. If you do plan to snorkel, you will need to bring your own gear, gear will not be provided.

While children are welcome to attend the event, they must be accompanied by an adult at all time especially if entering the water.

This event is located roughly a mile walk from the beach access point, please dress appropriately for the weather, bring water, sunscreen and a towel.

What to expect:

  • Observe trained volunteers using underwater survey methods
  • Learn how eelgrass data is collected and what it tells us
  • Ask questions directly with the monitoring team
  • Walk away with a deeper understanding of your local estuary
