Designed by John Russell Pope, architect of the National Gallery of Art and the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, DC, the Port of Missing Men is a historic hunting estate on Scallop Pond. Owned by ancestors of the Salm family, the North Sea property was originally 2,000 acres and was intended as a manly retreat from formal life. Built in the 1920s, the house includes a 1661 cottage original to the property. Col. Henry H. Rogers, the late Peter Salm’s grandfather, filled the home with American and European antiques as well as his famous ship model collection, which is now the core of the Naval Academy Museum in Annapolis. Naval objects and themes fill the rooms and its name the Port of Missing Men honors the sailors who were drowned in the wreck of the Lykens Valley in nearby Peconic Bay in 1893.
