Peconic Baykeeper is a 501(C)(3) Not-For-Profit organization dedicated to protecting and restoring Long Island’s swimmable, drinkable, and fishable waters. Established in 1998 as Long Island’s clean water advocate, Peconic Baykeeper uses science, education, and law to defend critical watersheds from the Peconic Estuary through the South Shore Bays. Position Description

The program support intern will assist Peconic Baykeeper with a wide array of programming including water quality monitoring, our Community Oyster Restoration Program, educational programming, cleanups, and more. Some time may be spent in day-to-day office operations as needed. Ability to work outdoors and on the water is essential. This position is seasonal (approximately June – August), part-time (20 hours per week), and it is designed to provide recent or soon to be college graduate experience working for an environmental non-profit. The position will be based out of our Hampton Bays, NY office.

Primary Responsibilities 

  • Weekly water sampling, processing, and result reporting for the Blue Water Task Force bacteria water quality monitoring program (training provided) 
  • Assist with the set-up and maintenance of our Community Oyster Garden Program
  • Support educational programming and outreach events as needed
  • Provide general support to office operations and our summer fundraiser
  • Contribute to social media and electronic newsletters 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (completed or near completion) in Environmental or Marine Science, Environmental Policy, or related fields. 
  • Willingness to spend time on and in the water a MUST including time aboard the organization’s 18-foot pollution patrol vessel
  • Ability to work independently as needed including access to reliable personal transportation
  • Motivation to learn and be immersed in all aspects of working for an environmental non-profit organization
  • Strong communication skills including social media

Compensation

Compensation will be $18 per hour with a required 20-hour weekly commitment, including occasional work on weekends, depending on program schedule. Program-related travel will be compensated at the current IRS mileage reimbursement rate.
